A few months ago, I gave a seminar on search engine optimization (SEO) to a room full of business people and marketing managers. I basically went through the basics of SEO and then progressed into other on site factors that affect SEO such as bounce rate, time on site and number of pages viewed.
In this seminar I also spoke about the effect of content marketing, social media and Google+ authorship on your website’s rankings in Google. With the amount of changes that Google have made over the past year, the only fail safe against any Google change is content. So make sure you work out a strong content marketing strategy with great internal linking, similar to Wikipedia to spread the link juice around and to aid users in their site navigation thereby decreasing the bounce rate and increasing the user’s time on site and number of page viewed.
Also with the Google Penguin updates, be very wary of creating spammy and unnatural backlinks. This use to work in the past but not anymore, Google now penalizes this.
